Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 13-15
Chapter
1: The construction of the Masjid of the Prophet (PBUH).
Anas b. Malik reported:
Yahya ibn Yahya and Shaiban
ibn Farrukh narrated to us, both on the authority of Abd al-Warith - Yahya
said: Abd al-Warith ibn Sa`id informed us, on the authority of Abu al-Tayyah
al-Dub`i, who narrated to us from Anas ibn Malik that the Messenger of Allah,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came to Medina and stayed in the upper
reaches of Medina in a neighbourhood called Banu `Amr ibn `Awf. He stayed among
them for four days. Ten nights, then he sent for the chiefs of Banu al-Najjar,
and they came wearing their swords. He said: It was as if I could see the
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, on his mount, with
Abu Bakr behind him and the chiefs of Banu al-Najjar around him, until he
reached the courtyard of Abu Ayyub. He said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, would pray wherever the time for prayer came,
and he would pray in the sheepfolds, then He ordered the mosque to be
destroyed. He said, “So he sent for the leaders of Banu An-Najjar, and they
came. He said, ‘O Banu An-Najjar, give me this garden of yours.’ They said,
‘No, by God, we will not ask for its price except from God.’” Anas said, “So
what I say was in it: it had palm trees, the graves of the polytheists, and
ruins. so the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
ordered the palm trees to be cut down, along with the graves of the polytheists,
so it was dug up and the ruins were levelled. He said: so they lined up the
palm trees facing the Qiblah and made their two pillars into stones. He said: so
they were reciting poetry while the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, was with them, and they were saying: O Allah, there is no good
except the good of the Hereafter, so support the Ansar and the Muhajireen. (Explaining
