Chapter 25: From what refuge is to be sought when in salat.
Amr al-Naqid and
Zuhair ibn Harb narrated to me: Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us: My
father narrated to us, on the authority of Salih, on the authority of Ibn
Shihab: Urwah ibn al-Zubayr informed me that Aishah said: I heard the Messenger
of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, seeking refuge in his prayer
from the trial of the Antichrist. (Sahih

Nasr ibn Ali
al-Jahdhami, Ibn Numayr, Abu Kurayb, and Zuhayr ibn Harb all narrated to us on the
authority of Wakee’ - Abu Kurayb said: Wakee’ narrated to us - Al-Awza’i
narrated to us, on the authority of Hassan ibn Atiyyah, on the authority of
Muhammad ibn Abi Aishah, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, and on the authority
of Yahya ibn Abi Katheer, on the authority of Abu Salamah, on the authority of
Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant
him peace, said: And he said, “When one of you recites the Shahada, let him
seek refuge in God from four things: ‘O God, I seek refuge in You from the
punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of life
and death, and from the evil of the trial of the Antichrist.’” (Sahih
Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 162)
Abu Bakr ibn
Ishaq told me, Abu al-Yaman told us, Shu`ayb told us, on the authority of
al-Zuhri, who said: Urwah ibn al-Zubayr told me that Aishah, the wife of the
Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, told him that the Prophet, may
God bless him and grant him peace, used to supplicate in prayer: “O God, I seek
refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from
the trial of the Antichrist, and I seek refuge in You from…” The trial of life
and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and debt.” She said: Someone
said to him: How often do you seek refuge from debt, O Messenger of Allah? He
said: “When a man is in debt, he speaks and lies, and makes a promise and
breaks it.” (Sahih

Abu Huraira reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
said: When any one of you completes the last tashahhud. he should seek refuge
with Allah from four (trials). I.e. from the torment of Hell, from the torment
of grave, from the trial of life and death, and from the mischief of Masih
at-Dajjal (Antichrist). This hadith has been narrated by al-Auza'i with the
same chain of transmitters but with these words:" When any one of you
completes the tashahhud" and he made no mention of the words" the
last". (Sahih

Muhammad ibn
al-Muthanna narrated to us, Ibn Abi Udayy narrated to us, on the authority of
Hisham, on the authority of Yahya, on the authority of Abu Salamah, that he
heard Abu Hurayrah say: The Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave,
the punishment of the Fire, the trials of life and death, and the evil of the
Antichrist.” (Sahih
Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 165)
Muhammad ibn
‘Abbad narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, on the authority of ‘Amr, on the
authority of Tawus, who said: I heard Abu Hurairah say: The Messenger of Allah,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Seek refuge in Allah from the
punishment of Allah. Seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave.
Seek refuge in Allah from the trial of the Antichrist. Seek refuge in Allah
from the trial of life and death.” (Sahih
Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 166)
Muhammad ibn
‘Abbad narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, on the authority of Ibn Tawus, on
the authority of his father, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, on the authority
of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, similarly. (Sahih
Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 167)
Muhammad ibn
‘Abbad, Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, and Zuhayr ibn Harb narrated to us: Sufyan
narrated to us, on the authority of Abu al-Zinad, on the authority of al-A’raj,
on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, on the authority of the Prophet, may God
bless him and grant him peace, similarly. (Sahih
Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 168)
Muhammad ibn
al-Muthanna narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ja`far narrated to us, Shu`bah
narrated to us, on the authority of Budayl, on the authority of `Abdullah ibn
Shaqiq, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, on the authority of the Prophet, may
God bless him and grant him peace, that he used to seek refuge from the torment
of the grave, the torment of Hell, and the trial of the Antichrist. (Sahih
Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 169)
Qutaybah ibn
Sa`id narrated to us, on the authority of Malik ibn Anas - in what was recited
to him - on the authority of Abu al-Zubayr, on the authority of Tawus, on the
authority of Ibn `Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, used to teach them this supplication as he would teach them a
surah from the Qur’an. He would say, “Say, ‘O Allah, we seek refuge in You from
the punishment of Hell, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the
grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of…’” The Antichrist, and I seek
refuge in You from the trials of life and death.” Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj said: It
has reached me that Tawus said to his son: Did you recite this supplication in
your prayer? He said: No. He said: Repeat your prayer, because Tawus narrated
it from three or four people, or something like that. (Sahih
